Hotline: Report Suppression of Free Speech
In higher education, the right to free speech is foundational to academic inquiry and open dialogue. Furthermore, at a public university such as UNC, the First Amendment protects your right to speak freely. Whether you're a faculty member or student, UNC AFSA is here to support you.

If you believe your freedom of speech (or someone else’s) has been compromised or if you have questions about your rights, use our Free Speech Hotline to reach out for assistance. We're committed to ensuring that every voice on campus can be heard without fear of retaliation or censorship.

Here is what we will and will not do with the information you provide:

-
We will not disclose your identity publicly, unless you indicate that we may do so.
-
We will highlight the First Amendment, UNC-CH policies, or UNC System policies pertaining to free speech, academic freedom, and institutional neutrality at UNC.
-
We will highlight UNC documents that run contrary to the values of free expression.
-
We will not publish incidents that cannot be documented or verified or for which it is unclear whether someone's free speech rights have actually been violated.
-
We will act only after we have gathered reliable, and to the extent reasonably possible, complete information. Without such information, we will not publicly identify individuals involved in the suppression of free speech solely because they are accused.
-
We will not harass anyone or encourage others to harass anyone.
