Elite college students’ declining religious literacy is hurting their ability to understand Western literature, art, philosophy, and politics. Writing as an atheist, he says students often miss basic biblical references from Shakespeare, Lincoln, Hobbes, Rousseau, and Marx. This makes it harder to grasp the ideas that shaped liberal education and democratic citizenship.
