The First Amendment’s application to public university students: an explainer

Public university students do have free speech rights, but schools can still impose limits. Courts generally treat universities differently from K-12 schools, giving students more protection, though rules still depend on the setting. The law is still somewhat unclear, with courts using different approaches to decide when universities should restrict speech.

The UNC Alumni Free Speech Alliance, Inc. is a North Carolina Corporation that has been granted designation as a nonprofit, 501(c)(3).

We rely on the contributions of our supporters for operational expenses; website upkeep; website/email domains maintenance; and most importantly, to raise funds to provide educational forums, events, and activities where our alumni, students, and friends may hear and be heard.
